Fibre Cabing

Fibre Cabling Installation – What Is Fibre Cabling?

We use Fibre Cabling Installation when the Bandwidth exceeds that of Cat6A or the distance between the sites is more than 100 Metres.   Fibre can carry over 10 times the amount of data and carry this in long lengths in a single core, reducing installation time and equipment needed.  As fibre is a specialist and precision product, it often comes with a comprehensive warranty, which when applied correctly, can last many years.  Fibre cabling can be buried underground if shielded or armored cabling is used.

There are different types of Fibre Optic Cable, some types are single-mode and some types are multi-mode.

We normally use multi-mode and there are different specifications to each.

These are called OM values (Optical Multi-Mode).

Fibre Cabling Installation Types

OM1 – It can support 10 Gigabit Ethernet at lengths up 33 meters.  It is most commonly used for 100 Megabit Ethernet applications.

OM2 – It supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet at lengths up to 82 meters but is more commonly used for 1 Gigabit Ethernet applications.

OM3 –  Supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet at lengths up to 300 meters.  Besides OM3 is able to support 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit Ethernet up to 100 meters. 10 Gigabit Ethernet is its most common use.

OM4 –  It is a further improvement to OM3.  It supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet at lengths up 550 meters and it supports 100 Gigabit Ethernet at lengths up to 150 meters.

Due to the small increase in cost, we normally recommend OM3 and OM4 fibre cables, as the bandwidth exceeds the cost of installation, plus the cable will there for many years, in which data rates will increase.
