Firewall and UTM (Unified Threat Management)
You should protect your Internet connection with a firewall and UTM.
This effectively creates a ‘buffer zone’ between your IT network (the LAN side) and other, external networks (the WAN side). In the simplest case, this means between your computer (or computers) and ‘the Internet’. Within this buffer zone, incoming traffic can be analysed to find out whether or not it should be allowed onto your network.
A firewall and UTM is a smart, active firewall – it listens to traffic coming onto your network (WAN) and analysis if traffic should be to pass to your network (LAN). As it inspects traffic, and Viruses or Malware are removed at source before they get to your network. Any Spam destined to your Inbox gets stopped in its tracks and any IPS anomaly gets dropped. (Intrusion Prevention System is a network security technology that examines network traffic flows to detect and prevent vulnerability exploits.)
